Mi vecino era un travesti, de maquillaje barato, y ropa repetida. Olía a perfume y axila. Raquítico como una escoba, de pelo largo y mal cuidado. El personaje de la cuadra, a quien todos molestaban, pero nadie se atrevía a enfrentar, simplemente porque él o ella, tenía mucha más calle. Si alguien se burlaba, sacaba voz de hombre, y todos se asustaban, pero luego transformaba en voz de nena y te lanzaba un beso.

Yo le tenía miedo, para mí era como ver un quiltro con arestín. Cuando me mandaban a comprar pan, yo cruzaba a la vereda contraria a la que él (o ella) estaba. Una vez, salí del negocio y estaba afuera, me pidió cien pesos y yo salí arrancando, de hecho, se me quebraron los huevos en el piso al soltar la bolsa. Cada vez que me portaba mal, mi padre me amenazaba que llegaría el travesti de la vuelta y me raptaría. Yo soñaba con eso, despertaba llorando. Mi madre retó a mi taita, le dijo literalmente: No quiero que asustes más al niño con ese fleto.

Pero fui creciendo y el miedo se transformó en una simple omisión. Siempre lo veía en la calle, con la misma ropa, oliendo a perfume y axila. Siempre saludaba, me decía el Pepe Grillo, pero no le daba bola.

Una vez, me metí en un lío con los cabros de otra villa, todo por la rucia de allá, me iban a sacar la cresta. Me pillaron llegando a la población, eran cuatro, me tiraron al suelo y uno sacó una cuchilla, el otro me corrió el polerón y quedé a guata descubierta. Pero en ese instante, apareció el travesti, tres de ellos salieron arrancando, salvo el de la cuchilla, los dos de manera casi tácita tomaron un duelo, el travesti le pegó dos rajazos en la cara y otro en la mano. Me sorprendí, y me quedé ahí, callado. Me quede sólo con él y me dijo: “Te apuesto que es por la rucia de la otra población, ten cuidado, a esa le gusta meter a los niños en tetes”. Le dije gracias, y me pidió cien pesos, tenía cincuenta, se los pasé. Prendió un cigarro y se fue.
Desde ese día, ya lo saludaba, al menos le movía la cabeza, pero si yo iba con alguien, siempre lo negaba. Perfectamente me podría haber dicho algo, pero fue respetuoso, se hacía el loco, al parecer entendía perfectamente lo que él representaba para los demás, pero no le importaba, creo.

Mi madre falleció de un derrame cerebral, de un día para otro. Estábamos en el velorio, y a eso de las 12 de la noche apareció el travesti, fue con unas rosas que había sacado de por ahí. Nadie dijo nada, salvo yo, que le dije gracias, me esbozó una sonrisa y se fue. En el funeral, mientras estábamos en el desgarrador entierro, vi que desde unos metro más allá estaba aquel tipo fumándose un cigarro, y a lo lejos me preguntó ¿Estás bien? Yo le hice un gesto de “sí”.

Ya tenía 15, y aun no daba mi primer beso, y la única que me daba chances era la rucia con la que me había metido alguna vez en problemas, no sabía cómo hacerlo. Yo creo que el travesti me miró por mucho tiempo que ya me conocía de memoria. Recuerdo que se me acercó y me dijo: «Parece que aún no te haces respetar mi Pepe Grillo». Me tomó de la cintura, y me asusté: “Así la agarras y le das un beso”, yo le dije que se podía sentir abusada, o algo así, me dijo que no fuera leso, que ella hace rato me daba chances, era yo el pajarón.
Crucé la villa, entre todos esos flaites, me acerqué a la rucia, la tomé de la cintura y le chanté el beso. La solté, puso cara de contenta, y salí arrancando. Venían como diez, y el travesti los espero a la entrada de mi población… ahí nadie fue capaz de entrar. Me gritaban que me defendía detrás de la falda de un “caballo”. Me preguntó cómo me fue y le dije que bien, se puso a reír y me dijo que ya estaba grande.

Mi papá veía el partido de la U con el Colo, mientras yo, sacaba carne de la parrila y las guardaba en una servilleta, salía escondido y se las pasaba a esta “loca”

Crecí.

Me transformé en un cabro de 18, estudiaba en Santiago, y cuando volvía a Chillán, ahí estaba. Cara dura me decía que el “Pepe Grillo” estaba guapo, yo me reía no más. Y todas las vueltas era lo mismo. En los veranos salía con short a tomarme una chela en la puerta, y le tiraba una lata. Estaba bueno para toser, le dije que dejara el cigarro, pero él ni ahí.

Cuando había platos únicos, él se ofrecía a ayudar para cocinar, pero todos lo negaban. Yo le dije a mis tías que lo dejaran, pero pusieron el grito en el cielo, que estaba cochino, quizás con que cosa.

Era marzo, y me preguntó que porque no me iba a Santiago, le dije que no había lucas, mi taita estaba hasta el pico con deudas, yo estaba obligado a trabajar. Me dijo que eso no era posible, así que me pasó mil doscientos pesos en monedas de diez y cincuenta. No sé en qué espacio vivía, pero se notaba que no entendía mucho, yo me puse a reír, no sé, su gesto me puso contento. Caché que era como un perro golpeado, de la calle, ignorante del universo, pero siempre fiel con la gente de la villa.

Armamos un negocio con mi taita, un almacén, y nos faltaba alguien que hiciera aseo, yo le dije que le diera la pega… pero mi viejo se negó, tajantemente. Traté de hacerle ver que era buena persona, que le dieran una oportunidad. Mi papá a regañadientes aceptó. Le presté la ducha y le compré ropa nueva. Se cortó el pelo y parecía otro. Pero su gesticulación era la misma de siempre, con esa voz alharaca contando mentiras divertidas.

Mi papá se acostumbró, igual los tiempos habían cambiado, de ser un bicho raro pasó a ser persona.
Desde ahí todos le daban pega en la población, alguno que otro favor pagado, y este se gastaba la plata en cigarros, pero se veía contento.

Pude volver a la universidad, estaba ya en el último año.

Regresé a Chillán, con una noticia, iba a ser papá. Mi taita me felicitó y esta “loca” también, me dijo que me iba a tener un regalo para mi guagua, que lo esperara.
Al otro día, desperté a ayudar a mi viejo al almacén, y este loco no había llegado a trabajar. Según mi papá, quizás se había quedado borracho, por ahí. Pero lo conocía, era extraño que saliera de la villa.
Las horas pasaban y no aparecía. Hasta que se acercó carabineros, preguntándonos si conocíamos a un tal Cristian Lumier, mi papá dijo que no… pero yo sí, era su nombre. Pregunté qué pasaba…

… Lo encontraron tirado, lleno de cicatrices, apuñalado en todos lados, con una botella que le atravesó el ano, con la nariz partida en dos, sin dientes… y con un paquete de pañales a su lado… Aún me duele el corazón.

Se fue parte de mi, me lo arrebataron. Se fue mi infancia, se fue la mitad de mi vida con ella. Sentí y siento un vacío, y que nunca pensé que ella estaba a cargo de llenar.
No dije nada, mi padre tampoco. Estaba mudo, hipnotizado, pregunté donde había pasado, pensé que quizás fueron los de al frente, pero no… desconocidos, a quienes nunca encontraron, y que no sé si hayan ubicado con tanto ímpetu, después de todo ella solo era un vagabundo, disfrazado, una loca que de alguna forma tenía que morir, daba lo mismo si en el río o en la calle.

No hice nada, aún estaba sin decir nada.

La gente de la villa juntó dinero, sumada a la que una vecina consiguió en la municipalidad, con eso pudimos darle un entierro digno. Llegaron muchos travestis, uno que otro personaje de la ciudad. Quise llorar, pero nadie lo hacía, porque simplemente a nadie le importaba tanto, sentí vergüenza de hacerlo. Me aguanté la pena, me tragué la saliva y me fui a casa. No podía dejar de dormir. Me dolía la cabeza, la pena me tenía un tanto agripado.

Me senté afuera, muy tarde y vi entrar a un perro, se veía mal tratado y no se quería acercar. Lo llamé, pero no se decidía. Entré a la casa y saqué un pedazo de carne, lo dejé a mi lado y empezó a comer, le acaricié la cabeza… y mi pena se desató, y mis lágrimas empezaron a salir desde mi corazón, para desembocar en el lomo de aquel perro.

Perdóname. Mi perrito guacho, mi loca, mi angelito guardián. Mi personaje principal. Mi musa preferida. Te tenías que morir de cáncer al pulmón, no así, humillado, como cachorrito envenenado. Cada vez que sueño contigo, ya no eres esa pesadilla que me despertaba a gritos, sino que esa bella princesa que corre por la luna y que sigo por el universo y que repito mil veces que te quiero. Mi amiga fiel, la contadora de cuentos, mi bella hermana, aquella que dejó su sombra en la entrada de esta villa y que me espera para decirme mi Pepe Grillo…….
